I swear, 5 years ago you could find a decent 1st or 2nd generation VW Bus for less than what this one’s going for now. $29,500. For a rusted-through shell with front-end damage. I don’t care how many windows it has.

When do y’all think the classic car bubble will pop? Ever?

People joke about abhorrently rusty things giving tetanus, but I think this thing just gave me leprosy. In my eyes.

Some of those windows were probably made by the rust :p

This highly sought after project 1964 Volkswagen 21 Window Bus is available in green and is missing the engine. It has lots of potential and has been with the same owner for many years and until very recently has been sitting in storage. It is an excellent car for full restoration. For $29,500
This highly sought after thoroughly rusted out 1964 Volkswagen 21 Window Bus is available in green and ocher and is missing the engine and everything else you might need and w hat is left is absolutely worthless. It has zero potential and has been with the same owner for many years and until very recently has been sitting outside in the rain where raccoons have been living in it . It is an excellent car for the junk heap for full reclamation. For #tree fiddy.

It will pop. Within the next few years as the boomers stop driving.

Same seller/flipper wants 7 grand for this ponton coupe:
https://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1958-mercedes-benz-220se-c-8818.htm
Either the prices are very negotiable (this is a parts car unless you want to run in the red ), or the seller is greedy and looking for the unwashed.

hey, cars from the 40s are pretty cheap now. Think the bubble will pop off
when the boomers do.

I hope that the bubble pops, if it even is a bubble. However, I think it’ll continue even after we don’t have fuel to run them.
Also, Beverly Hills Car Club should be renamed to Beverly Hills Vin Club.

Sadly as horrible as that thing looks, there really is a fair amount to start with.
If you’re into these things (thankfully I am not)

These are the guys who sell piles of rust for way too much money.

10-15 years when most of the 60s hippies are in nursing homes or dead, these things will start going down in price.

Beverly Hills Car Club pisses me off to no end. I have a couple search alerts set up and Beverly Hills Car Club listing will routinely ping them. It is always either really clean cars with an extra zero added to the end of the price, or utter garbage with two zeros added.
Consistently wish eBay would allow you to block sellers from appearing in results.

Believe you me, I’m glad that cars from the ‘40s are pretty cheap now .

I lol’d at the “has been with the same owner for many years” part. Like the number of owners matters for something like this.

Baby boomers buy these things to spite hippies.

But at what point does it stop being a restoration and simply become a template for all new sheet metal? And you would also have to replace absolutely everything inside. Can you even find the parts?

It has 4 intact windows and maybe the rear view mirror frames are usable. That is about it.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 16:40 |

I think much of the sides, rear, and undercarriage is repairable, tbh. And no clue on finding parts — but I suspect that they can be found.
Look, I think it’s all silly for the prices these deathtraps command, but to each his own.
But if I was restoring this, I would hurry up-- because in a few years, $30k will get you a fully restored one, I think.

Nice floors. For being in CA, their cars sure look like what I would expect from the upper midwest or New E ngland.

I’ve tried to explain to my boys that something is worth exactly as much as somebody is willing to spend. As long as there are morons with fat wallets, these guys will keep doing this.

Must have been near the beach. That’s why I couldn’t live right at the beach unless the garage was hermetically sealed.
For right now I'm okay with just smelling the beach instead of hearing it too.

years ago, i had built a 302 chevy and was hunting a chevy 2 (post car) to stuff it into. this was pre craigslist. i couldnt touch a beat to death shell for anything less than $1500. and that was for a shell that was going to need absolutely everything...... i searched for the better part of 5 years for a decent shell.
and i eventually gave up on finding a nova.........
the bubble is real......
![]() 07/25/2018 at 17:03 |

So many of their cars are in similar condition. I suspect they aren’t all from CA.
The beach is a fun place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 17:06 |

Yeah. But some are obvious barn finds.
Really? I couldn't imagine living away from the beach, even though I never go.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 17:26 |

From a barn in Toledo OH?
Beaches up here are cold and dreary in the winter, loaded with tourists in the summer.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 17:29 |

Where I am the beach is still cold, and it's always crowded. That's why I never go. But I'll never move.

I think it’s all about the vin. Build a “new” one slap the vin on = instant profit at action.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 17:47 |
|
This. Take the VIN plate from this one, slap it on another bus, cut some extra windows in it, and suddenly you have a "real" 21-window bus.

From the same seller who at one point was trying to sell what was apparently at one point a 1967 Porsche 912.

I REMEMBER THAT hahaha
Also this gem:
stancebros ain’t got nothing on these
![]() 07/25/2018 at 18:09 |

Even better if it comes with some faded yellow paperwork. See how this one long time owner always had it serviced at VW of _____ !
![]() 07/25/2018 at 18:12 |

I don’t plan to move from the PNW, but I also don’t envision living on the water. I can drive to a beach in a short time or to the ocean in under a few hours. That’s enough.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 18:24 |

Basically paying for the VIN, and building a whole new bus around it. Totally nuts.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 18:35 |

That is for the VIN

I have thought about this, I have three older cars, consider we will never have classic cars again. Everything today is built to be recycled. Fairly soon we will have to take all of that a step further, everything will be electric with maybe a backup generator, perhaps 3D printed carbon bodies that are recycled when damaged... So the old cars we love will never happen again.

It is eminently repairable. A pair of mate s did much the same thing a few years ago. Admittedly theirs had all the glass and most of the interior even though it lacked its engine and transmission and had been sitting in a paddock for thirty years. Rust wise it wasn’t as bad either. I think they put about twnty grand into it plus lots of time.
I've posted about it before...

That would make this a $50,000 v an. That’s $2, 380/window. And the one you posted looks to be in significantly better shaped, and stored in an arid climate. But then again, I admit I know little about this sort of thing.

good luck with that.

It’s worth it just for the VIN number, to claim it’s a real one
